The UFC’s January return to Boston could be one of the biggest events of the year.
According to multiple reports, Stipe Miocic will defend his heavyweight title against top contender Francis Ngannou at the January 20 event from the TD Garden in Boston. If signed, the title fight would join Daniel Cormier vs. Volkan Oezdemir for the light heavyweight belt.
Miocic (17-2) has defended his title twice, besting Alistair Overeem and Junior dos Santos. He became champion with a first round knockout of Fabricio Werdum in Brazil last year.
The 35-year-old Ohio native tied the UFC all-time record for heavyweight title defenses, sharing the mark with Randy Couture, Tim Sylvia, Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez. He is currently on a five-fight win streak since a 2014 decision loss to dos Santos.
Ngannou (11-1) cemented his status as the No. 1 contender with a first round knockout of Overeem this past weekend. He is 6-0 since signing with the UFC in 2015.
The 31-year-old from Cameroon has also stopped former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski, submitted Anthony Hamilton and holds stoppage wins over Bojan Mihajlovic, Curtis Blaydes and Luis Henrique inside the Octagon. His only career loss came in 2013 via decision vs. Zoumana Cisse in his second career contest.
Along with the two title fights, Dustin Ortiz takes on Alexandre Pantoja, Justine Kish meets Ji Yeon Kim and Thomas Almeida battles Rob Font.
