Derek Brunson spoiled the return to the Octagon for Lyoto Machida, knocking the former champion out Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 119.
In a back-and-forth first round, it was Brunson connecting with a huge shot that floored “The Dragon.” Machida was making his return to action after a drug suspension, fighting for the first time in two years.
The card took place from the Ginasio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo, Brazil with bouts airing live on FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2 and UFC Fight Pass.
In the co-main event, Colby Covington entered hostile territory and dominated recent UFC welterweight title contender Demian Maia, scoring a decision.
The win was the fifth in the row for Covington, pushing his overall mark to 13-1.
Pedro Munhoz kept his name on the short list of bantamweight title contenders, submitting Rob Font in the first round. Thiago Santos also scored a main card finish, besting Jack Hermansson.
Francisco Trinaldo and John Lineker earned decisions over Jim Miller and Marlon Vera.
On the prelims, Vicente Luque, Antonio Carlos Junior and Marcelo Golm all picked up submission wins, with Jared Gordon, Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos and Deiveson Figueiredo claiming victories via decision.
