They were expected to fight three years ago, but everything possible came up to stop Alistair Overeem from fighting Junior dos Santos.
Saturday night at UFC on FOX 17, Overeem flexed his muscle vs. dos Santos, finishing the former UFC champion in the second round with a perfect left-hook.
“Junior is very dangerous opponent,” Overeem said. “You have to fight cautious. He throws bombs and felt very strong.
“We had to have this game plan to be cautious and figure out his rhythm before picking him apart.”
With just second left, Overeem (40-14) did just that, finding an opening and striking. He planted dos Santos on the canvas and followed up, forcing the referee to step in.
“We had to soften him up,” Overeem said. “He has excellent hands. During the fight, I felt his reaction and he was trying to read me. (The fight) went according to plan.”
Next up should be the winner of Fabricio Werdum vs. Cain Velasquez for the UFC heavyweight title for Overeem. Those two meet in the early stages of 2016.
“I feel very confident with the team I have around me,” he said. “I feel very confident for the next title run.”
