Despite it being aired exclusively on Fight Pass, UFC Fight Night 80 was the perfect opener for an incredible stretch of events for the promotion.
Kick-starting a three-events-in-three-days stretch, the Las Vegas cared featured Rose Namajunas defeating Paige VanZant in the main event with a fifth round rear-naked choke.
Namajunas, a finalist on The Ultimate Fighter who competed for the strawweight title, absolutely dominated VanZant from the opening bell on. She bloodied her foe and applied submission-after-submission through the fight.
Despite all that punishment, VanZant continued to fight back, taking everything Namajunas threw at her. The Team Alpha Male fighter escaped several chokes and armbar attempts.
Michael Chiesa claimed one of the biggest wins of his career, scoring a second round submission victory over Jim Miller in the co-main event.
Chiesa and Miller went toe-to-toe in the first round, but it was the former Ultimate Fighter who secured the finish in the second. Chiesa locked up a rear-naked choke for the win.
Sage Northcutt’s hype train was almost derailed vs. Cody Pfister, but the 19-year-old prospect weathered the storm and earned a second round submission of his own.
Thiago Santos claimed a decision over Elias Theodorou to open the main card, while Tim Means, Sergio Moraes, Aljamain Sterling, Santiago Ponzinibbio, Danny Roberts, Zubaira Tukhugov and Kalin Curran were prelim winners.
Means knocked out John Howard in the featured early fight, Sterling scored a submission win vs. Johnny Eduardo and Curran did the same vs. Emily Kagan to kickoff the night.
Chiesa and Miller were named the “Fight of the Night,” while Namajunas and Means secured “Performance of the Night” bonuses. All four picked up an additional $50,000.
The attendance inside The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan was announced at 1,643 for a live gate of $234,725.
