James Moontasri believes he has found his home at welterweight, debuting there with a thrilling first round TKO over Anton Zafir Saturday night at UFC 193.
Moontasri (9-3) landed a spinning back-kick that possibly broke a rib of Zafir, following it up with a spinning back-fist. He landed several more shots and the referee quickly stepped in.
Zafir, making his UFC debut, replaced Brendan O’Reilly on 11 days notice.
“Before, I was focused on getting down to weight in my camps,” Moontasri said. “During taekwondo, I had more success at welterweight. I feel like myself, more comfortable.”
A former taekwondo standout, Moontasri showed those skills inside the Octagon. He fought back from a takedown to bring the fight to Zafir.
“I am very happy,” he said. “Thanks to Anton for taking the fight on short notice.
“This is my style. I am embracing it; this is me.”
