Dan Kelly vs. Steve Montgomery

We’ll conclude the early Fight Pass prelims with middleweights Dan Kelly (9-1) and Steve Montgomery (8-3) exchanging inside the Octagon.

Round 1: Not sure, but we might have had our loudest cheer for referee Herb Dean. Kelly trying to cut the distance, as Montgomery has a huge reach and height edge. Nice combo from Kelly lands, and Montgomery connects with a knee to the body. Another kick to the rib-region, but Montgomery lost power by slipping on the canvas. Kelly with a series of lefts to the chin and he has gained the clinch. Sweep by Kelly off his judo and he hammers him with an elbow, and more. Big-time misstep by Montgomery. Kelly rolls with the back, working for a rear-naked choke. He moves back to the mount and inside the guard.

Round 2: Kelly applying pressure and forcing Montgomery to back up, but he lands with a counter. Clinch again for Kelly, and he’s looking for the sweep. Several knees to the body land by Montgomery, who was finding his mark to the same area. Kelly grabs hold of the neck and is dragging him down, but fatigue allows Montgomery to survive. Little more pep in the step of Montgomery with 90 seconds to go in this round. Huge combo lands, including a nasty right-hook, by Montgomery.

Round 3: Kelly comes out with more energy than he showed in the second, backing Montgomery up with lefts and rights. He gains the clinch, but a low blow will cause a stop fro a brief moment. Kelly is fine and we are back to the action. Takedown for Kelly, but Montgomery reverses and gets back to his feet. Excellent kick to the body by the American Top Team fighter follows and he has the momentum. Huge left by Kelly, as he is connecting with more power when he lands. Montgomery the more effective striker, but he isn’t doing much in terms of damage. Knees to the body from Kelly inside the clinch, as he gets him down with a sweep. Kelly tries for a handful of submissions, shifts to the mount and moves back to a submission before the round ends.

Richie Vaculik vs. Danny Martinez

Our first televised prelim features flyweights Richie Vaculik (10-3) and Danny Martinez (16-7).

Round 1: Martinez comes right out and these two are looking to find their range early. Vaculik appears to have figured out the timing of his strikes, countering each shot. Kick is caught by Martinez and he follows up, bringing Vaculik to the ground. Martinez using his ground skills to keep this one on the canvas with two minutes to go. Vaculik reverses and scores with his own takedown as we head under a minute. He gets a hook semi-in and is looking to take the back, but Martinez reverses.

Round 2: Martinez comes out and is winging shots in the direction of Vaculik, but he can’t connect. His corner instructed him between rounds to not do that, but he didn’t abide. Takedown for Martinez, as he plants him on his back. Martinez lands with a right hook and is following up, looking for the kill. Vaculik scores with his own takedown and briefly takes the back, but Martinez sweeps and is on top.

Round 3: Vaculik with a takedown just seconds into the third round, but Martinez is able to work his way up-and-out. Inside leg kick by Vaculik lands. However, Martinez scores with a takedown off the scramble. He’s inside the half-guard with three minutes to go, and his corner instructed him “just do what I’m telling you.” Vaculik applying the pressure while he’s stuffing the takedown attempts, but on a third one, Martinez scores. Yet again, Martinez with the takedown.
