Ronda Rousey will compete for the third time in 2015 at UFC 193 this weekend, and it sounds like the bantamweight champ is ready to take a break from the cage afterwards.
Rousey is booked to face Holly Holm in Melbourne on Saturday, after taking out Bethe Correia in August, and Cat Zingano in February. It’s been a busy year for “Rowdy”, especially when you consider her acting career, sponsorship gigs and all the media obligations she has.
Recently the star spoke with Rolling Stone–not many MMA fighters can say that–and Rousey relayed this:
“I’m selling a product and I have to be out there; I don’t have the option not to be,” she says. “But after this fight, I’m definitely going to let some people miss me, for sure. Believe me, there’s nothing I would like to do more than disappear for a while.
“I would like to wait until UFC 200 to fight again. I’m going to be filming [movies] in the meantime, so I’m still going to be keeping busy,” she continues. “When I’m filming it’s kind of weird, I’m on camera the whole time, but nothing really goes out until a year or two later. It is kind of like disappearing in a way.”
If you’re wondering when UFC 200 will go down, it’s scheduled for next July, so Rousey is looking at around an eight month break. Since Rousey is the biggest draw in the game right now, the UFC was probably hoping to have her fight in the interim, but she did step up for them this weekend (initially Rousey-Holm was supposed to take place on January 2nd).
Now, if Rousey loses to Holm this weekend, however, then maybe this would change no? It’s hard to imagine the undefeated fighter wanting to take an extended break from fighting, if her reign did come to an end. Then again, maybe not.
UFC 193 will be hosted by the Etihad Stadium.
