As you certainly know, Belfort is scheduled to scrap Dan Henderson tonight in the main event of UFC Fight Night 77, which will take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Recently “The Phenom” spoke to the Brazilian outlet Combate, and while doing so, he had this to say about the brash McGregor (quote via Bloody Elbow.com):
“Trash talkers always existed, since the Tank Abbott days. Conor is winning, but once he’s not, his name will be forgotten. An athlete must be respected like Big Nog was. He retired but he is in the history of the sport, because he’s humble. MMA needs to be more sport and less entertainment. This is not WWE. We must remember that there are families and children watching. Conor McGregor goes over the line.”
Vitor busting out the Tank Abbott reference for the old school fans…Belfort met the heavy handed slugger way back in 1997, and finished the fight in less than 60 seconds. That’s almost 20 years ago. Crazy.
While some people will agree with Belfort here, there’s also a lot of fans who love McGregor because he’s one of the best smack talkers in the game.
“Notorious” is booked to fight featherweight champ Jose Aldo on December 12th at UFC 194. If he loses, it will be interesting to see if he dials down his verbal attacks a notch. If he wins, well, chances are that’s not going to happen.
