It’s not often you’ll hear Daniel Cormier congratulate Jon Jones, but after his rival was reinstated by the UFC on Friday, the champ did just that.
As everyone under the MMA sun predicted would happen, the UFC announced it is reinstating Jones, after the fighter recently reached a plea deal with authorities. The promotion hasn’t determined when Jones will return to the Octagon, but since Cormier is holding the belt that was stripped from him, a rematch with “DC” is certain.
Following the news of Jones’ reinstatement, Cormier posted the following comments on Facebook:
Congrats to Jon “Bones” Jones on his reinstatement to the UFC. For MMA fans this is a good day. A guy that has shown to be one of the greatest fighters of all time is back. As a competitor there could be no other outcome and this is the best news I’ve heard in a long time. Jon has said the right things and his actions are backing his words up. We all hope this is the last time we have to deal with anything like that. And lastly as a fan u get to see see 2 of the best fighters compete against each other. With that being said I can’t wait to compete against him again. -DC
Yup, the good news is we’ll all be treated to a second fight between two of the planet’s top fighters, as Cormier noted. It’s going to be fascinating to see how Jones looks, and whether Cormier makes the necessary adjustments.
Jones and Cormier battled in January, and the latter lost the fight via unanimous decision. After Jones’ arrest, Cormier faced Anthony Johnson for the vacant belt, and won it via submission.
Most recently, Cormier earned a split decision win over Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 192 earlier this month.
