After over a month away, Bellator returned Friday night with the promotional debut of Melvin Guillard.

Bellator 141 went down from the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California.

For Guillard, things could not have gone worse, as Brandon Girtz earned a split decision victory. Girtz improved to 12-4 in his career and has now won two in a row and four of his last five with Bellator.

Guillard (32-15-2) is just 2-5 with a no-contest over his last eight fights spanning three promotions.

Lightweights also filled the co-main event slot, as Patricky “Pitbull” Freire claimed a decision over Saad Awad. Despite fireworks at the weigh-ins, neither fighter was able to get on track vs. the other.

In a heavyweight contest, Justin Wren made a triumphant return to the sport with a decision victory over Josh Burns. Wren left MMA five years ago and was working to raise awareness in Africa before deciding to compete again.

Former Strikeforce female champion Marloes Coenen claimed a submission win over Arlene Blencowe to start the main card. Coenen locked up an armbar in the second round, her 17th career submission win.

In early prelim action, A.J. Matthews scored a TKO victory over Emiliano Sordi, while Brent Primus and Ilima Macfarlane each earned split decisions.

A planned heavyweight bout between Lorenzo Hood and Raphael Butler was scrapped just hours before the main card was to start. Hood suffered a knee injury while warming up in the backstage area.
