A lot of people were caught off guard by the UFC’s decision to grant Holly Holm a title shot, and while some are speculating why this happened, the bantamweight apparently isn’t one of them.
Ever since Holm transitioned into MMA, there’s been a ton of buzz behind her, since she’s one of the most accomplished boxers on the planet. Then, once Holm started scoring wins in the cage, talk about a Ronda Rousey-Holly Holm bout began. Especially once Holm signed with the UFC.
Holm has gone 2-0 thus far in the Octagon, but since both of her wins were via decision, not too many people, if anyone, believed a title would be next. Well, Holm recently appeared on FOX Sports 1, and the talented striker said this (quotes via MMA Fighting.com):
“Maybe it’s one of those things where they just want to test me out, kind of throw me out there,” Holm said. “Maybe it’s because they really feel I’m ready. I don’t really care too much of the why. I just want to make the best of the situation.”
“I think she knows that in beating me that even says more about her stand up,” Holm said. “For a long time so many people were always just talking about her armbar. I think that she wanted to prove to them she has more than that, which she has done just that. So this is a big opportunity for her to really show people what she’s made of.”
It’s going to be very interesting to see how Rousey approaches Holm at UFC 194, no question. After all, Rousey’s stand-up has come a long, long ways, and she’s no longer a submission specialist. Just ask Bethe Correia or Sara McMann.
Rousey-Holm will headline the January 2nd event, and will go down at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
