Action heated up the streets of Nashville Saturday night, as UFC Fight Night 73 went down inside the Bridgestone Arena.

Glover Teixeira overcame a hostile environment to submit former University of Tennessee football standout Ovince Saint Preux. The win snapped a two-fight losing skid for the former No. 1 contender to the UFC’s light heavyweight title.

Saint Preux never tapped, going out instead from the hold. Teixeira immediately checked on him after releasing the hold.

In a battle of ranked lightweights, Beneil Dariush scored a stunning upset of Michael Johnson via split decision. Most felt Johnson had controlled the first two rounds, but the judges gave it to Dariush over the No. 5 ranked fighter.

Derek Brunson solidified his standing in the middleweight division, turning back the challenge of Sam Alvey. Brunson uncorked with a left early in the first, following up with shots on the ground to force the stoppage. He’s now 5-1 in his last six, losing only to Yoel Romero.

Heavyweight Jared Rosholt improved to 5-1 with the promotion by earning a decision over Tim Johnson in the lone heavyweight contest on the card.

Amanda Nunes made a name for herself at the expense of Sara McMann, as the Brazilian locked up a rear-naked choke after flooring the former title contender. Nunes earned the first round finish and likely a slot higher up the rankings when they are released.

Ray Borg kicked off the main card with a strong wrestling performance in handing Geane Herrera his first pro loss. Borg, a Top-15 flyweight, used takedowns and slick transitions to overcome a nasty cut on his left eye area.

Uriah Hall put an exclamation point on the prelims, knocking out Oluwake Bamgbose inside of the first three minutes and scoring a finish. The bout was the debut for Bamgbose, a fellow New York City native like Hall.

Chris Camozzi picked up a much-needed decision over Tom Watson, scoring with numerous takedowns and effectively working on the ground.

Dustin Ortiz, fighting for the first time in his home-state under the UFC’s banner, dominated Willie Gates for two-plus rounds before finishing the fight in the third. Ortiz, who went 2-2 last year, rocked Gates with elbows, forcing the referee to step in.

The first decision of the card went to Frankie Saenz, as he claimed a split decision over Sirwan Kakai to begin the televised prelims.

Jonathan Wilson continued to string of early finishes on UFC Fight Pass, knocking out Chris Dempsey. Marlon Vera slipped on a triangle choke, switching to an armbar and earning a second round submission over Roman Salazar.

It was a strong start for Scott Holtzman, as “Hot Sauce” made a triumphant Octagon debut with a third round submission win vs. Anthony Christodoulou. The former Tennessee Volunteer locked up a rear-naked choke after out-striking the Greek through two-plus rounds.

Teixeira and Saint Preux earned “Fight of the Night,” while Vera and Nunes picked up “Performance of the Night” bonuses. All four pocketed an extra $50,000.

The attendance was announced at 7,539 for a live gate of $454,551.
