Demian Maia proved that you can’t just walk into Brazil and walk out with a victory.

Maia, a former title contender to the UFC middleweight belt, stopped Neil Magny’s seven-fight win streak Saturday night at UFC 190 in the main event of the prelims.

For Maia, the bout was about keeping himself in contention at 170 pounds. It marked his first finish since a 2012 submission win over Rick Story and moved his record to 5-2 over his last seven.

“I come here for (the people), to show the best I can,” he said. “(Magny) gave his back. I know he is tough and has a tough neck, but I trust my skills.”

Maia earned a decision over Ryan LaFlare in Brazil earlier this year and added a 2014 win vs. Alexander Yakovlev after back-to-back defeats via decision to Rory MacDonald and Jake Shields.

Magny (15-4) had not lost since a 2013 decision defeat to Seth Baczynski.
