Rena Barao is hoping to make it even-steven this Saturday at UFC on FOX 16, and if the former bantamweight champ avenges his loss to TJ Dillashaw, he’s down for a rubber match.
Last May, Dillashaw rocked the MMA world by stopping Barao at UFC 173, and in doing so, he snapped the fighter’s 33 fight, undefeated streak. They’ve been booked to to fight two more times, however, a brutal weight cut for Barao and then a rib injury for Dillashaw, punted the rematch down the line. Now, on July 25th, they’ll finally throw down.
Of course, it remains to be seen if Barao can defeat Dillashaw and get the title back, but if he does, he’s up for facing the Team Alpha Male fighter again. While speaking to MMA Junkie.com recently about the prospects of a third fight, here is some of what Barao had to say:
“I think it would be fair and that the UFC will decide to go for the third time with Dillashaw,” Barao said “T.J. beat me the first time, I’m going to beat T.J. this time, so I can’t think of anyone else besides him.”
It will be interesting to see if the UFC goes in that direction, if of course, Barao can avenge his loss. It likely depends on how exciting the fight is and what goes down The UFC has gone to the rubber match well a few times in recent years, so the fight might have to be particularly memorable, before it books a rubber match right off the bat.
Since their first encounter, Dillashaw has KO’d Joe Soto, and Barao has tapped out Mitch Gagnon.
UFC on FOX 16 will go down at Chicago’s United Center. In the co-main event, Miesha Tate will take on fellow bantamweight contender, Jessica Eye.
