Gunnar Nelson made sure there would be no losing streak next to his name, submitting Brandon Thatch Saturday night at UFC 189.

After a loss via split decision to Rick Story last October, Nelson (14-1-1) went to work on his striking ahead of his bout with Thatch. That all paid off, as the Iceland-native landed a flush left-hook/right-hand combo.

With Thatch on the ground in pain, Nelson pounced, working quickly for the rear-naked choke. He has now earned 11 first round finishes among his 14 career wins.

“We’ve been working on (the striking),” he said. “I know when it gets to the ground, I am going to get a finish.”

Nelson is now 5-1 inside the Octagon, including four submission wins. Three of those have come in the first round.
