Although Lyoto Machida is coming off a loss to Luke Rockhold in April, and failed to end the reign of Chris Weidman last July, the middleweight believes he’ll be in the title shot picture after UFC Fight Night 70.
As you probably know, Machida is booked to fight Yoel Romero next Saturday, in what will feature the #3 ranked 185’er taking on the #6 positioned middleweight respectively. It’s a big fight for both men, as Machida is looking to get back on track, while Romero is hoping to extend his five fight winning streak and move into a top contender spot.
Recently Machida appeared on “The MMA Hour”, and while discussing what could be on the line, June 27th, he stated (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“I think if I beat Romero, I’ll be in the mix,” Machida said. “I’ll be in the mix and I can fight for the title anytime. But that’s not my goal now, to think on the title, because Yoel Romero is a tough opponent. I have to think on my next fight, keep my focus on Yoel Romero. But if I have a good victory over him, I’ll be in the mix.”
There you have it. Now, will he be knocking on the door for a title shot if he scores a big win over Romero? Probably not, since he has lost two of his last three fights, but he likely would be on the short list for a title fight replacement, if the need arose.
Of course, “Jacare” Souza is waiting in the wings, as until Rockhold took out Machida at UFC on FOX 15, most people thought the jiu-jitsu titan would be the next man to face Chris Weidman (provided he had beat Romero, but of course, that fight never happened).
Machida also revealed in the interview that he underwent hand surgery not long after his loss to Rockhold. “The Dragon” insists, however, that he’s had a solid camp leading up to UFC FN 70.
Next Saturday’s bout will take place in Hollywood, Florida.
