Lyoto Machida is set to fight Yoel Romero on June 27th, and while he understands all the buzz tied to the middleweight, “The Dragon” is confident he can defeat the decorated wrestler.

Unless you’re just a casual fan, you know that Romero is one of the more accomplished wrestlers to transition into MMA. After all, the Cuban fighter won an Olympic silver medal in freestyle wrestling, and also was a world champ.

In recent years, Romero has also put together a pretty dangerous striking game, which he’s used to put away notable opponents like Tim Kennedy (yes, yes, all the controversy aside). Due to a five fight winning streak, the “Soldier of God” has moved into the #6 ranking in the UFC’s 185 division.

Well, recently Machida appeared on “The MMA Hour”, and while discussing Romero, he had this to say (quotes via Bloody

“I think he is on my level. Romero is a top fighter. “Machida said. “He has good wrestling and knows how to control the fight on the ground, plus, he has a lot of knockouts. He’s a very complete guy, one of the hardest guys of my career, no doubt about it. But I know how to fight wrestlers, I’ve trained a lot and had guys like Glover Teixeira, Kevin Casey and Kenny Johnson helping me. If I beat him, I believe I will be in the mix for a title shot again.”

There’s no question that Machida has fought some talented wrestlers in the past, and has had some memorable success. The Brazilian star has defeated the likes of Ryan Bader, CB Dollaway, Randy Couture, and Mark Munoz, all of whom have notable wrestling credentials.

UFC FN 70 will go down at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
