Don’t get Ben Rothwell wrong.
If UFC officials said he’d be the next challenger to the heavyweight title, the Wisconsin native would jump at the chance.
But, Rothwell sees a different path for himself and the rest of the top contenders in the division.
This weekend, Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum meet to unify the belts. After that, Rothwell feels there is another challenger he should be paired with, while Stipe Miocic deserves the winner of Velasquez-Werdum.
“I think Stipe has built up a good case and I think he should be next,” said Rothwell, following his submission win over Matt Mitrione this past weekend. “I think Andrei and I should dance.
“He’s ranked fourth and some people are already talking about him getting the next title shot. I think him and I should fight next.”
Arlovski and Rothwell have met before, as the former UFC heavyweight champion scored a third round knockout vs. Rothwell in Affliction back in 2008. Since, both have had their share of ups-and-downs, but they find themselves on the up-side right now.
Rothwell has scored three first finishes, submitting Mitrione and knocking out both Alistair Overeem and Brandon Vera since a 2013 loss to Gabriel Gonzaga. Overall, he is 5-3 with the UFC, losing also to Mark Hunt and Velasquez.
