If you’re not a boxing fan and didn’t shell out one cent to see Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao, then chances are you were somewhat pleased to hear the fight was a consensus dud.
Sure, the bout went down the way most hardcore fans and pundits thought, but that doesn’t change the fact a lot of folks were pretty, pretty, pretty disappointed with the biggest boxing bout ever (Mayweather won it via unanimous decision if you’ve just returned to civilization).
Well, one man who wants to a smile back on the faces of combat sports fans is Bobby Green, who is scheduled to fight Al Iaquinta on July 15th. Recently Green appeared on “The MMA Hour”, and while discussing his aggressive approach to fighting, “King” relayed the following (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“That Mayweather fight has me sick,” Green said. “We’re gonna pay all this money to watch two guys have a sparring, dancing session? I don’t know what the heck happened. To pay that type of money is ridiculous. I’m gonna give these people [back] their hard-earned money. They came to see a fight, here I come. I promise you I’m not going anywhere. I’m standing in the middle of the cage. Move me if you can.”
On ‘paper’, Green-Iaquinta has “FOTN” potential all over it, since both guys are talented pugilists who like to come forward. Green will be looking to get back on track, as he was decisioned by Edson Barboza in his last outing, and had his eight fight winning streak snapped. In the aforementioned interview, Green accused Barboza of running away from him in that bout, and also levied the same accusation against Josh Thomson (who Green decisioned last July).
The outspoken fighter also offered this:
“I come to go out on my shield, bro,” Green said. “If you’re gonna beat me, send me out on my shield. I would rather lose in an honorable way than go to decisions.”
It could be a doozy. No question. Iaquinta, meanwhile, earned a razor thin, split decision win over Jorge Masvidal in April and has won four in a row.
UFC FN 71 will be hosted by the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego.
