Heavyweights Josh Barnett and Roy Nelson will collide this September at UFC Fight Night 78 from Japan, the promotion announced recently.
The event will coincide with “Road to UFC: Japan,” which brings together eight Japanese fighters who are competing for a contract with the promotion. The reality series will air on television in Japan and Fight Pass worldwide, while the fight card airs on FOX Sports 1.
Set for September 27 from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, Barnett vs. Nelson will serve as the main event.
The reality series will take place in both Las Vegas and their respective hometowns in Japan under the supervision of both Barnett and Nelson. The show begins airing in July on a weekly basis in Japan. The two finalist will square off on the card.
“We are very happy to be bringing our live event to the Saitama Super Arena once again this year,” executive vice president and general manager of UFC Asia, Ken Berger, said. “There is a rich and diverse MMA talent in Japan and we’re positive that through Road to UFC: Japan, we will uncover more UFC prospects. We have recently witnessed the fast power of Kyoji Horiguchi in the Octagon against flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson and it really is only a matter of time before we see a champion emerge from Japan.”
