Paige VanZant may not be as big of a name as Conor McGregor yet, but according to UFC President Dana White, he seems some similarities between the rising strawweight and “Notorious”.
If you missed it, VanZant worked her way to an impressive, and pretty dominant decision win over Felice Herrig on Saturday, which was an upset if you base it on the current rankings. Prior to UFC on FOX 15, Herrig was ranked #8 in the 115 pound division, while VanZant was (or is for the time being) at #12.
Of course, there has been a lot of hype tied to VanZant in recent months, following her stoppage win over Kailin Curran in November and her recent deal with Reebok. There’s also been a ton of buzz regarding VanZant since she had to pull out of TUF 20 last year, because at the time, she was only 20 years old.
Well, following VanZant’s UD victory over Herrig on Saturday, White relayed the following about “12 Gauge” (quotes via Bloody Elbow.com):
“It’s almost like the Conor McGregor thing,” White said. “The guy bursts out of nowhere, explodes onto the scene and backs it up. And Paige VanZant did tonight, too. She looked unbelievable. And she is. She’s one of those people that has that thing.”
“She’s got that thing that I always talk about — that thing you can’t teach,” White said. “Everybody in my dressing room tonight wanted to meet her. They were like, ‘We want to meet Paige VanZant.’ She’s got that thing man. And she can fight.”
Now it will be interesting to see if VanZant moves into the top ten rankings, or who the UFC books her to fight next.
The strawweight, who’s been training out of Team Alpha Male, currently holds a record of 5-1.
