Before Cub Swanson was booked to fight Frankie Edgar last November, the featherweight was knocking on the door for a title shot, thanks to a jaw dropping run which featured six straight wins. Although Swanson is a ridiculously well rounded and dangerous fighter, the rugged vet was no match for Edgar’s takedowns and top game, and was taken out in the fifth round.
Up next, however, Swanson will take on Max Holloway at UFC on FOX 15, in a scrap that has “Fight of the Night” contender written all over it. Recently, the latter spoke to MMA Junkie.com about the bout, and while citing Edgar’s performance versus Swanson, he relayed this:
“Frankie showed me I need to get in his face and outwrestle him, but I’m not a wrestler, so that’s out of the equation for me,” Holloway said. “I’m going to go in there and do what I do best. And that’s being Max Holloway. I find a way to win no matter what. I’ll go out there and fight my heart out for 15 minutes if it goes that way and just leave it all in there. I’ve been training hard so I’m not going to just fall over. I’m going to go in there and have the fight of my life.”
It’s true that Holloway is a pretty different fighter than Edgar, who over the years, has developed a pretty nasty boxing game to go with his wrestling. That said, Holloway has won five straight fights, and has scored finishes in four of them, so Swanson is going to have to be on his toes versus “Blessed”.
UFC on FOX 15 will be hosted by the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. In the main event, Lyoto Machida will take on fellow middleweight contender Luke Rockhold.
