After going throughout 2014 without fighting, Josh Barnett is hoping to return to the Octagon soon, and he’d like it if Brock Lesnar was the man standing across from him.
Barnett hasn’t fought now since December, 2013, when he was brutally KO’d by Travis Browne. The 37 year-old is hoping to book his next fight, and while appearing on “The MMA Hour” recently, Barnett relayed he’d like to fight former UFC champ. No one really knows if Lesnar’s going to come back to the UFC, but since his WWE contract is reportedly up soon, there’s been a tee-un of speculation that the pro-wrestler might make another MMA run.
After arguing that a fight with Lesnar would make for “huge business”, the experienced pro-wrestler and catch-wrestling master also noted (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“For me I think of it as the business side of things,” Barnett said. “Not the business side of oh, I’m going to make so much money, but the business side of two pro wrestlers, the styles, seeing the two of us go out it is because people will find interest in it and the fight will be interesting itself. Not just in ‘Hey, I’m some guy who’s going to bully some other guy who’s got less experience, and then I act like I’m king s— of turd mountain.'”
Yes. A lot of folks would likely tune in to see Barnett-Lesnar, no question, but really, it remains to be seen if the latter even wants to fight again. Lesnar hasn’t stepped in the Octagon since 2011 when he was taken out by Alistair Overeem in the opening round. Lesnar, who was returning from a battle with diverticulitis, said he was done fighting after the loss.
It should be noted that even if Lesnar re-signs with the UFC in a couple months time, chances are he wouldn’t actually fight until the end of 2015.
Barnett, meanwhile, is currently ranked #6 in the UFC’s heavyweight division. Prior to facing Browne, the PRIDE vet and former UFC champ stopped Frank Mir in August, 2013.
