Phil Davis has taken some verbal shots at Jon Jones in the past, and as he gets set to fight Ryan Bader at UFC on FOX 14, the decorated wrestler has done so again.
While tomorrow’s main event between Alexander Gustafsson and Anthony Johnson will determine who fights the champion Jones next, if Davis scores a big win, he won’t be far out from a title shot. Currently Davis is ranked #5 in the light-heavyweight division, and he’s coming off a one sided, decision win over former title challenger, Glover Teixeira.
Davis recently attended a media luncheon to promote Saturday’s card, and when the subject of Jones was brought up, here is some of what “Mr. Wonderful” had to say (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“I’ll get [Jones] down and keep him down,” Davis said. “That is a fact. Put me on the record.”
How about that? One could say that’s a pretty bold statement, considering Jones just decisioned former Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier, who was largely unable to take the champion down. Well, Davis was asked to weigh-in on the wrestling side of the recent bout, and the Alliance MMA fighter stated:
“I’m not sure how much he tried to,” said Davis, who has trained with Cormier in the past. “He went for a couple takedowns early on and then he just started putting hands on him. I mean, he definitely did wrestle. But at the same time, he kind of got away from it.”
Well, all the Jones talk aside, Davis has a tough challenge in store for him tomorrow night. Not only is Bader a pretty accomplished wrestler in his own right, but he’s also got some nasty stopping power in his hands. The Arizona fighter is currently riding a three fight winning streak.
UFC on FOX 14 will be hosted by the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, Sweden. In addition to Gustafsson-Johnson and Davis-Bader, the card will also feature a pivotal middleweight scrap between Dan Henderson and Gegard Mousasi.
