Two welterweights who have fought – and defeated – some of the top names in the sport will meet at World Series of Fighting 17 in the main event, as Jake Shields collides with Brian Foster.
Set for January 17 from Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, the main card airs on NBC Sports Network beginning at 9 p.m. ET.
Shields (30-7-1) is a former Strikeforce champion and No. 1 contender to the UFC welterweight title. He is coming off a win over Ryan Ford and holds previous victories over the likes of Martin Kampmann, Dan Henderson, current UFC champion Robbie Lawler, Paul Daley and others.
Foster (22-6) has won eight of his last nine, including a 2010 victory over UFC top contender Matt Brown via second round submission. He missed all of 2012 recovering from brain surgery.
“We are thrilled to bring in the New Year with an incredible showdown between two of the world’s top mixed martial artists,” WSOF president Ray Sefo said. “This is a match up that MMA fans have been anticipating for quite some time, so to be able to deliver it in the fight capital of the world, at a venue that is part of one of the most historic fight destinations in history in Caesars Entertainment, makes the magnitude of this match up that much bigger.”
Additional bouts will be announced over the coming days and weeks.
