Since Stipe Miocic has gone 6-1 in the UFC to date, and is currently ranked #4 in the heavyweight division, many believe he could lock up a title shot, provided he defeats Junior dos Santos at UFC on FOX 13.
Sure, interim title holder Fabricio Werdum and reigning champ Cain Velasquez still have to fight, but taking out the #2 ranked JDS, should seal the deal right? Well, it doesn’t look like Miocic is about to drop to his knees and call for a title shot if he wins tonight.
While speaking to MMA Junkie at a media event recently, here is some of what Miocic had to say about his title shot prospects:
“I have no say-so in (who gets a title shot), so I just worry about Saturday,” Miocic said. “I want to fight, that’s all I care about. If I get a title shot, awesome – that’s what I want. That’s what I signed up for. But we’ll see what happens.”
Now Miocic did concede that beating dos Santos could get him a crack at the belt, but also noted that Werdum’s up first. Of course, the #3 ranked Travis Browne is also in the mix, but since he recently lost to Werdum, he may need to score another win or two.
First things first, however, and that’s dos Santos, who if not for Velasquez would likely still be the promotion’s heavyweight king. So, in other words, Miocic is going to have to score an upset before he takes another step closer to the belt.
Miocic also offered this take on “Cigano”:
“He’s a former champ, he hits hard, moves well, great boxer, good at takedown defense, good at taking people down – so it’s going to be fun.”
Yes, it’s certainly going to be interesting to see what unfolds. It’s a huge fight for both men and stylistically, it has the potential to be fantastic.
UFC on FOX 13 will be hosted by the U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona.
