Ovince St. Preux erased any doubters Saturday night by finishing former champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the main event of UFC Fight Night 56.
St. Preux replaced Jimi Manuwa on short notice and didn’t let the opportunity slip past him, landing a left hook that floored Rua. He followed up with several shots that left the Brazilian crowd in stunned silence.
“Shogun is a legend,” he said. “I have a lot of respect for him and I am still a big Shogun fan. But to become a legend, you have to beat a legend, and that is what I did (Saturday).”
The 31-year-old St. Preux (17-6) earned his fifth Octagon victory and is now 6-1 in his last seven. Earlier this year, he lost to Ryan Bader in his first UFC main event via decision following finishes of Ryan Jimmo, Nikita Krylov and Cody Donovan.
In a surprising move, OSP called out Anthony Perosh and Fabio Maldonado after before adding he will face “anybody” out there.
