Glover Teixeira Welcomes Phil Davis To Brazil At UFC 179

ufc 179

Officials have announced a previously reported co-main event fight for UFC 179 between light heavyweights Phil Davis and Glover Teixeira.

Set for October 25 from Brazil, the card features a main event between featherweight champion Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes.

Davis (12-2) will be trying to bounce back after suffering a decision loss to Anthony Johnson earlier this year. “Mr. Wonderful” was hopeful that a victory over Johnson would propel him into a title shot, but he was dealt a completely one-sided defeat.

The former Penn State University wrestling standout earned a decision victory over ex-UFC champion Lyoto Machida the last time he stepped foot in Brazil to compete. His only other loss came at the hands of Rashad Evans, also a former UFC champion.

Teixeira (22-3) is also coming off a loss, as he was topped by light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. The Brazilian lost for the first time in six Octagon bouts.

Below is the current lineup for the card:

UFC Featherweight Championship
Jose Aldo (c) vs. Chad Mendes

Light Heavyweight: Phil Davis vs. Glover Teixeira

  • Dufresne says:

I’ve gotta say, I’m off the Phil Davis bandwagon. He has consistently under performed every time it really matters. And when he has won against big names, like Machida, it was underwhelming. Davis has a phenomenal amount of natural athleticism and a good amount of skill, but I don’t see him ever being truly elite much less winning a belt. At least not on the big stage.

And while I’m complaining, Glover hasn’t impressed me lately either. His wins have all been over so-so competition or fading names. He’s got a lot of finishes to his credit, and some of them were impressive, but they were all over mid-lower tier fighters. His only finishes against ranked opponents are against Bader (#8), who’s massively over ranked in my opinion, and Maldanado (#15) who I’m also not sold on.
