Frankie Edgar sees the UFC rankings as a tool to guide him back towards a title shot in the featherweight division. So, after defeating BJ Penn for a third time, “The Answer” has just that for his next opponent.

“I see I’m No. 3,” said Edgar, during his post-fight interview with FOX Sports 1. “They moved Cub Swanson ahead of me, so, it only makes sense fighting the guy ahead of me. I want to fight again before the year is out.”

Swanson is coming off a recent victory over Jeremy Stephens that appeared to secure his title shot. However, with the champion – Jose Aldo – and challenger – Chad Mendes – delayed due to an injury, it is possible both fight again.

As for his latest win, that was a tough one to accept. Edgar earned his third victory over Penn in a battle of former champions, but it didn’t play out the way he expected.

“It was bittersweet. He was the man. Pound-for-pound, he was the best,” Edgar said. “He started the upside of my career giving me that title shot. He’ll always be a part of my career.

“I wanted to establish the pace. I didn’t know what to expect from BJ. I wasn’t focused on what he did. I focused on what I had to do. I heard Herb Dean tell him to do something, and I started to pour it on. I felt him fading in the second round.

“I almost felt bad a little bit. Everyone holds BJ in such high regard, and so do I. But before the fight, BJ kept calling me out and saying he was going to finish me, so I got a little mad.”
