UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson will face Joseph Benavidez this Saturday in the main event of UFC on FOX 9.
Back in 2012, Johnson scored a split decision victory over Benavidez, becoming the first-ever champion in the UFC’s 125-pound division. Since that fight, he has defeated John Dodson and submitted John Moraga this year.
For “Mighty Mouse,” the thought of finishing a fight is something that is always on his mind.
“The plan is always to finish my opponents,” said Johnson, during an appearance on UFC Tonight earlier this week. “But if you look at the last five guys I’ve fought, none had ever been finished before.”
That list includes the aforementioned Benavidez, Moraga and Dodson, along with Ian McCall twice. Prior to that, he lost a championship match to Dominick Cruz.
After going 25 minutes with Benavidez before, Johnson feels he has improved in every aspect of his fighting style – including his striking.
“I throw technical punches, from the cage straight down the middle,” he said. “That’s how my body functions correctly.”
