Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler will square off this March at UFC 171 to crown a new UFC welterweight champion.

The fight was announced after Georges St-Pierre vacated his title. St-Pierre defeated Hendricks earlier this year via decision.

Hendricks (15-2) has won 10 of his 12 UFC matches, including Carlos Condit, Martin Kampmann and Josh Koscheck. Many viewed him as the winner in his five-round war with GSP and he was expected to receive a rematch in 2014.

Lawler (22-9) is coming off a victory over Rory MacDonald, a close friend and training partner of St-Pierre’s, most recently. He is unbeaten since returning to the UFC from Strikeforce.

The fight will be the main event, as UFC president Dana White sent out a message on Twitter announcing he misspoke when saying it would be the co-main. The planned headliner between UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira has been moved to UFC 172.
