UFC Fight Night 33 may not feature any championship fights, or many bouts with serious title shot implications tied to them, but there’s certainly more than a few that should be pretty sweet. For example, on the FOX Sports 2 prelims, Nam Phan will make his bantamweight debut versus Takeya Mizugaki. If you’ve seen either man fight, and there’s an extremely good chance you have, then you know it has real “FOTN” potential.
As Phan (18-11) was preparing for today’s bout, he sat down with RM Sports and talked about various issues, including his first MMA bout, cutting to 135, and of course, Mizugaki (18-7-2) himself. Here is some of what he had to say about the 29 year-old Japanese fighter, who is coming off victories over Jeff Hougland, Bryan Caraway, and Erik Perez.
“Mizugaki, that’s a scary fight, he’s on a three fight win streak, very powerful, very good striker, but I think my style, it will be a fun fight,” the 30 year-old Phan stated. “His style matches very well to my style and I think it’s going to be very fun. At least from the fan’s point of view. A lot of fireworks at least. I’m excited.”
Today’s bout is a big one for Phan, as he’s coming off a unanimous decision loss to Dennis Siver last December, and is 2-3 in his last 5 bouts. It will be interesting to see how he looks at 135, and if he can defeat the promotion’s #10 ranked bantamweight, it would be a great way to start his run in the division.
