5 Funny Pictures from UFC 165: Jones vs. Gustafsson

While “Clash of the Captions” may be on hiatus for the foreseeable future, there are still plenty of images worthy of a chuckle or two stemming from action in the Octagon. Such was certainly true last weekend at UFC 165 where cameras captured a handful of unflattering moments in time. Sure, the stakes may be high when it comes to competition in the cage, but that’s not to say some fun can’t be had as well. Also, if you feel like upping the “funny”, captions are more than welcome in the Comments section. (Photos by USA Today Sports Images)

So this is why Brendhan stopped Clash of the Captions, he got tired of us one upping his ‘humor’ and decided to hog it all to himself.

  • hindsightufuk says:

i’d hate to say after all these years that i’m finally abandoning this site but its getting towards pointless even checking in.
if these lists weren’t bad enough, now you’re stretching to trying to keep us amused? i don’t understand. this is woeful.
I’m not trying to be disrespectful but its not even funny.

Brendan, i’m never one to complain but what the fuck is going on?

  • Brendhan Conlan says:

Not stretching. People mentioned missing Clash of the Captions so I thought I’d provide the best alternative I could under the requirements I’ve been given for producing content.

P.S. – You should update the email info listed on your profile.

  • THEGUNNER says:

Maybe someone should tell the producers of this site other sites which are linked below have way more news and articles that are actually funny. Bring news or at least give us something to debate about. Unless they dont care if this site losses years full of followers and goes to crap. Imo no more pointless top five stuff.

  • SBERG says:

I really liked this site because it wasn’t log jammed with useless post after useless post like you see on sherdog and bloody elbow but now this site is just useless article after useless article. Not sure what they’re paying you Brendhan but it might be time to start putting out feelers for a new gig. This site might be going bye bye if this keeps up……….

    Hi Brendhan,

I have to admit that I originally thought the change in content was the result of some prepared material that was to be used as filler while you went on holidays. The post of yours that Ive quoted above indicates otherwise. Having said that, I think that I tend to agree with most of the other users of the site who have expressed their discontent with the recent content. I happened to stumble across this site a year or so ago and found the MMA news to be well written and informative, and found that the dialogue between members was second to none. The site gave us a place to have good discussion about MMA news and topics without the BS that seems to happen in so many other online forums. One of the current issues for me is that while I do enjoy some of the Top 5/Top 10 type articles, I do find that some of them are stretching it a bit and that the opportunity to have good discuission is dwindling. It’s hard to discuss the top funny moments in a card because its not that interesting for one, but there’s also not as much to discuss. In the other similar columns it seems that they generate debate and are often backwards looking, in my opinion. Clash of the captions was fun at times and allowed us all to become involved in something fun within the site.

I do have a couple of questions but please forgive me if I have missed other posts that may have answered them.

    1. You mentioned requirements for producing content. What are the requirements and what has forced the recent change?

    2. What is preventing a return to the way things were?

    3. My e-mail address in my profile is current yet I have not received anything from this site. Should I have expected an e-mail and if so, what did I miss?

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

    Enjoy your evening!!

If brendhans just a writer that writes for other sites a checks a check I dont expect him to care much but who is in charge of this site should start to care before we all leave and never look back.

  • THEGUNNER says:

Enough opinions more facts. Ryan couture got cut by the ufc no need for 5 opinions on that. Bellitor weigh ins. bellitor live results 2morrow. Thats what we want to read about.

  • Creature says:

I guess I should chime in as well..

I have been around this site for quite a long time, since the good ol days of when LP and MMALOGIC used to make everyone and their grandmother rage uncontrollably. I feel like this site has slowly went from one of the most interesting and original MMA sites to starting to feel like an even worse version of bleacher report.

I feel like I only come here anymore for more of a feel of sentimental value than I do for MMA related content. It sucks because this is one of the few MMA sites not filled with trolls or ridiculously biased casual fans who rage as soon as you disagree with their opinion on a fight/fighter.

Hopefully you guys can return the site more towards the way it used to be, with content actually worth reading and at least somewhat intelligent conversations/arguments about said content.

Rant over, good day/night sirs at 5oz.

  • hindsightufuk says:

For sure what I miss most is the mature discussions, you cant get that anywhere else, and my current life doesnt have many (any?) other MMA fans to talk to. I actually resorted to joing sherdog forums recentley, but I find only the worldwide forum I can post in as the UFC one is littered with people who constantly confuse their benign opinions with fact. I really do miss this place, but sentiment keeps bringing me back, hopefully one day we’ll be back in full effect

  • fanoftna33 says:

I have been here for at least 5 years now, for any of you that do not remember the whole Affliction giveaway that is how long I have been around, and while the content does seem a bit down lately ( i remember Sam Caplan well and loved the friday before fight predictions ) I still return for the comments as they are always fun and no b/s like every other site with people going above and beyond to be rude and others selling products at low low rates or telling you about how there mother earned 500,000 a year with one simple trick.
This is still one of the most user friendly, mma fan friendly sites around and I for one will keep coming here as long as we are able to have these great mma debates amoung mature educated fans. And I do hope you guys do not leave as it will not be as fun without comments from Hindsight and the like.

  • darth_irritable says:

Spot on Fan. I really only come for the comments. But the content is so wretched now, that it’s becoming not worth it.

Brendhan, I hope they’re running analytics so they can see the visitors nosedive.

  • darth_irritable says:

To clarify – I come for the comments NOW. When Brendhan and others were writing actual stories, this site was awesome,

  • AlphaOmega says:

The comments are basically all but gone now, this article is the first one in awhile that’s gotten more then 4 posts

  • Creature says:

Completely forgot about Caplan and the fight predictions.. I also enjoyed those, and the arguments they would sometimes stir up 😉

Those were the days lol. Heres to hoping the Brendhan and the other mods find a way to return the site to its former glory, sooner rather than later.

  • Richard Stabone says:

I don’t disagree with the general sentiment here, but I also don’t think the relatively small core group of 5oz commenters are as important as some might think. At the end of the day, it’s all about page hits & clicks… generating as much traffic as possible & leveraging that into advertising $$. If the bleacher report-ish, short attention span, list/slideshow format brings in more traffic than the more content-driven news/analysis/commentary/etc. that’s what will win out. 5oz had its golden era when Caplan was at the helm, with plenty of ups & downs since. Seems that Brendhan is trying to work within the currents constraints to find a happy medium, and hopefully get things back on track from the underwhelming stuff we’ve seen in recent weeks.

  • darth_irritable says:

Yeah – that’s why I asked about analytics. Would be interested to see if it ACTUALLY makes a difference. I suspect part of it is that they can generate more content (if of lower quality) to get them into search results.

  • raker says:

    Well said Richard!!

  • MCM says:

Sorry, I haven’t been posting much lately.

    @ Richard,
While you’re definitely right to an extent, 5oz needs to ask itself what type of site it wants to be? While page hits do matter, they don’t necessarily transfer into advertising dollars, at least not as much as brand loyalty and an active membership do. Example, BleacherReport gets more page hits but MMAJunkie built up a brand and encouraged solid, active membership and is now the leader in MMA news reporting.
Community and accessibility to that community are what drives the internet. An engaged community is more willing to invest time into a site and more willing to encourage others to invest time as well. It’s one of the reasons I’ve been advocating for a FORUM section on this site for so long.
I love this community. I love that there are intelligent, mature, posters on this site. I used to love arguing with MMALOGIC (before he went off the deep end), or agreeing/disagreeing with superdavenorcal or Lord Faust. I love that when I see you post in a story, Richard, I know I’ll probably disagree and the ensuing discussion will be debated with intelligence, wit and facts (or facts as we see them) and neither of us will utter the term “TUF noob” or “Fag”, and whether we agree or disagree we’ll both come out of it better educated (hopefully).
It’s those types of interactions that lead me to answer the call to write for this site, and to publicize those stories to my personal MMA community. It’s those conversations that lead me to directing other posters from Bloodyelbow and MMA Fighting to 5oz. But I can’t help build community when the vast majority of the site is dedicated to meaningless lists intended for page hits.
We’ve already lost Faust, superdave, and LOGIC along with Rece Rock, Dufferense, Elkymbo, Sychotic, Jak, Escillian, moosebaby, GIKE MOLDGERG, Dr. Stoppage, is Angry Mike still around? (he was one of the first) and a slew of others that made this community worth investing in. The internet is vast, if you’re not invested in a site, what’s the point of going there?
Where are your page hits then?

A previous comment may have been flagged as spam in the past, preventing future comments. Ive approved your comment here, so it should be smooth sailing from here. Thanks!

  • MCM says:

Holly Crap! 5oz has an administrator?!?

  • AlphaOmega says:

Yes, I pointed that out awhile back when an official looking article was posted by administrator

  • Dufresne says:

You haven’t lost me yet, but it is pretty obvious that I’m not around near as much as I was before. Part of that is just due to life getting busier, but I’ll also admit that I’m not coming as often due to the change in content and the lack of commenting that the old content encouraged. I’ve always browsed other MMA sites when I wanted the most up to date info, but I couldn’t stand the comment sections on other sites so I always came here where we could have decent, informed, non-hateful discussions. But with all of these lists, there’s nothing to comment on anymore and the community I’ve enjoyed here for the last 7 years or so is evaporating. I keep coming back hoping to see an original article, interview, or one of MCM’s posts (by the way, having a long time commentor writing for the site is one of the other reasons I love 5oz), but they’re fewer and farther between these days. With my limited schedule these days I have to pick and choose where I go online, and since 5oz is losing it’s commenting community, one of the main draws of this site is disappearing. I’ll probably always check in once every few days or once a week, but without the comradery that originally brought me in I can’t promise it’ll be more frequent.
