Phil Davis: “I won because I stayed busier.”

It has been a little more than a week since UFC light heavyweight Phil Davis outpointed Lyoto Machida in an effort many felt “The Dragon” deserved to walk away victorious from. Though Davis did put Machida on the mat a few times, most of the match-up’s offense seemed to come from Brazilian’s side even though it wasn’t necessarily reflected on the scorecards

Davis has heard the criticism and decided to respond on a recent episode of Inside MMA, providing his own explanation on why he deserved to get the judges’ nod.

“I won because I stayed busier. I went to work early, I stayed busy the entire round, and whenever I could I went for takedowns. Whether you get them or not, you must look to advance your position when standing and on the ground,” said Davis of the UFC 163 scrap. “Takedowns matter a lot.”

The 12-1 “Mr. Wonderful” went on to break down Machida’s style as being counter-productive when it comes to winning rounds based on the lack of aggression.

Leave it Phil, it was a shit fight, two lacklustre performances. Let it lie before we have to watch a rematch

  • Screenplaya says:

It didn’t hurt that the judges apparently had never witnessed a fight before.

  • SBERG says:

Ohhhhhh…we’re back on this topic again?

  • darth_irritable says:

Davis is about as self aware as Guida.

Phil, you lost! I don’t care what the judges said. Machida clearly won. I don’t even consider that my opinion. I just know that it’s fact. I’m tired of all these people always saying “you can’t leave it in the hands of the judges.” Bullshit! The judges should do their job and come up with the right decision! I can see if the fight is really close and you have a split decision, but this was a no brainer!

  • king mah mah says:

By the way, I’m not a fan of either. So my statement is unbiased.

  • king mah mah says:

I guess as long you can hold someone down for 20 seconds during a round, then you automatically win that round! Takedowns alone winning fights will be the death of this sport!
