Star kickboxer Tyrone Spong returned to the cage last night for the first time since his MMA debut last November and once again impressed, peppering WSOF 4 opponent Angel DeAnda with the kind of kicks one might expect from an athlete with his expertise. Though Spong was not able to put DeAnda away, he did secure a Unanimous Decision nod based on the repeated blows he landed to his adversary’s legs and face.
Another fighter with an unbeaten record and a good deal of hype also took to the ring in the form of lightweight Nick Newell. Newell, who competes without the use of a forearm, looked sharp against Keon Caldwell and ultimately secured a fight-ending Guillotine Choke before the midway point of the opening round. Newell improved his record to 10-0 with the performance, the seventh submission of his career.
Other winners at the event included Gerald Harris, Jared Papazian, Gesias Cavalcante, and Marlon Moraes. Also notable, WSOF President Ray Sefo came up short in his attempt to prove he can still compete, falling to Dave Huckaba via TKO in the second stanza of their showdown.
