UFC star Chael Sonnen is no stranger to controversy, especially when it comes to the practice of Testosterone Replacement Therapy. Though Sonnen has not necessarily done anything wrong this time around, the 36-year old’s name was back in the news this week for TRT based on his upcoming bout in Boston against Mauricio Rua.

Apparently, the State of Massachusetts doesn’t have a fully formed policy in relation to TRT and has yet to license Sonnen while they scramble to get something official on the books. In a statement to Bleacher Report, an athletic commission official explained, “TUE (therapeutic use exemption) for testosterone is uncharted territory for the Commission which has sent the issue to its Medical Advisory Board to determine allowable ratios prior to the fight and issuing Mr. Sonnen a fight license.”

Sonnen’s status was listed as only being “preliminarily” approved to compete at UFC Fight Night 26 pending tests before and after the August 17 scrap with “Shogun”.
