It wasn’t the match-up many were expecting for UFC middleweight Costas Philippou but it certainly makes sense on paper. According to an official announcement from the organization, Philippou has been booked for a bout with Francis Carmont at UFC 165. Both men are on solid streaks, putting the fight’s winner in prime position for a claim at top contendership.

The 12-2 Philippou has come out of five straight fights with his hand raised including success against Court McGee, Jorge Rivera, and Tim Boetsch. Six of his total victories have come by way of TKO.

Carmont holds an overall record of 21-7 and hasn’t lost since 2008! Among the opponents he’s taken out since coming to the UFC are the likes of Chris Camozzi, Tom Lawlor, and Lorenz Larkin.

UFC 165 is set for September 21 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with light heavyweight champ Jon Jones putting his gold up for grabs against Alexander Gustafsson in the evening’s headlining attraction. Other fights attached to the card include Pat Healy-Khabib Nurmagomedov, Matt Mitrione-Brendan Schaub, and Renan Barao-Eddie Wineland (for the interim bantamweight title).
