With UFC middleweight Anderson Silva serving as the next opponent for freshly crowned champion Chris Weidman, deserving contender Vitor Belfort will have to seek a new scrap instead of sitting around while waiting for a title-shot to materialize. Fortunately, he already has a challenger.
Costa Phillipou, who can make his own claim at having earned a crack at the championship, went on Twitter earlier today where he expressed interest in a bout with Belfort under one condition.
“Belfort sounds good to me,” exclaimed Phillipou, adding, “NOT in Brazil!”
Philippou also added a “#TRT” after the message, pointing to Belfort’s controversial use of Testosterone Replacement Therapy. Outside of Brazil, numerous athletic commissions have questioned whether or not “The Phenom” should be allowed to use TRT based on a failed drug test for PEDs a number of years ago.
The 23-10 Belfort has fought in his proverbial backyard three of the last four times he’s taken to the ring. Most recently, he racked up consecutive knockouts of Michael Bisping and Luke Rockhold in the South American nation.
Philippou is 12-2 and is on a five-fight winning streak. He was last seen stopping Tim Boetsch with strikes last December.
