Super-slick submission artist Shinya Aoki has been tearing opponents up outside of the United States for a long time and now it appears he has a new group of fighters to terrorize. The longtime lightweight, who dipped his toes in the welterweight pool a few times, has expressed interest in competing as a 145er and successfully taken the first step towards doing so.
The 30-year old provided evidence of his achievement, recently Tweeting a picture of his feet on a scale reading 68.5 kilograms (i.e. 145 pounds) along with a message exclaiming, “Hello featherweight class!!!”
No date or opponent has been linked to his divisional debut. The bout is likely to take place under the ONE FC banner based on his recent run of rumbles in the promotion.
Aoki is 33-6 in his career with 22 wins by way of submission. Among the opponents he’s tapped out over his ten year career are the likes of Joachim Hansen, Lyle Beerbohm, Tatsuya Kawajiri, and Eddie Alvarez.
