Over the past few years fans had gotten used to Bellator providing a trio of shows labeled as the Summer Series to help tie seasons together. While the organization is doing something similar in 2013, and already has one of the events in the books, it turns out there will only be two cards this time around.

MMAJunkie was first to report the change. No reason was offered from Bellator or Spike TV officials, though the ratings for last week’s show certainly couldn’t have helped their faith in the cause.

According to a story on Bleacher Report, Bellator 96 drew around half of the viewers the promotion averaged on a weekly basis last season. Numbers also showed a slight decrease for the debut of Bellator: Fight Master.

Bellator 97 is scheduled for July 31 and is set to feature two tournament finals in addition to a title-defense from lightweight champion Michael Chandler. Given the recent news regarding this summer slate, it will mark the final lineup for Bellator until Season 9 starts up on September 7.
