Typically a free agent boasting a 9-0 mark in the cage including eight finishes and a run as regional champion would merit a sniff from the UFC. Then again, lightweight Nick Newell is far from a standard prospect considering he competes without the use of his left forearm based on a birth defect. Though Newell was hoping Zuffa would come calling after his recent decision to part ways with XFC, it appears an offer never materialized and he has instead opted to sign with World Series of Fighting.

MMAFighting has confirmed the contract with WSOF officials who also stated Newell would make his debut in August or September. Though respectful of Newell’s accomplishments, UFC President Dana White has gone on record as saying it was highly unlikely the company would ever ink the 27-year old based on the controversy surrounding his medical condition.

Newell has six submissions and two knockouts to his credit. Equally impressive, all of finishes have taken place in the opening round of action.
