UFC lightweight Diego Sanchez (24-5) has already been linked to an August 31 outing at UFC 164 but, to date, no opponent has been named for the rumored rumble. As a means of helping facilitate the fight, “The Dream” recently decided to pass along three names he’d liked to be paired against including one opponent he’d beef up for if necessary.

According to a report on UFC Tonight, Sanchez has his sights set on Josh Thomson but is also open to action against Gilbert Melendez or Nate Diaz.

Diaz, who Sanchez has called out in the past, mentioned wanting to move up to 170 pounds after his last bout – a loss to Thomson. However, that won’t prevent Sanchez from following him if necessary to potentially lay claim to owning victories over both Diaz Brothers. Sanchez outpointed welterweight Nick Diaz in a memorable meeting a number of years ago.

Melendez and Thomson are both former Strikeforce title-holders. The 21-3 “El Nino” is coming off a Split Decision defeat to champion Benson Henderson, while Thomson is 20-5 and owns past wins over the likes of Melendez, K.J. Noons, and Pat Healy.

Sanchez was last seen picking up a decision nod against Takanori Gomi in a closely-contested March effort. The victory was his first at lightweight in more than three years after a run as a 170er.
