Brandon Vera returning to heavyweight for bout with Ben Rothwell

Brandon Vera returning to heavyweight for bout with Ben Rothwell

Back in 2006, an unbeaten Brandon Vera announced designs on eventually earning gold at both light heavyweight and heavyweight. However, with a 4-6 record in his last ten tilts, Vera hasn’t come close to achieving either goal and is simply hoping to hold on to his job these days. It also looks like he’s ready to close the book on competing at 205 pounds.

According a report from MMAJunkie, Vera will return to the heavyweight division at UFC 164 where he’ll battle Ben Rothwell. Though it still lacks a headliner, the August 31 event is expected to feature in-ring appearances from Diego Sanchez and Alistair Overeem.

The 12-6 Vera has been shelved since coming up short in an action-packed offering against Mauricio Rua last August. Eight of his wins have featured some form of stoppage including a knockout of Frank Mir years ago.

Rothwell holds an overall record of 32-9 with an impressive 28 finishes to his credit. Like Vera, he too is coming off a loss. Prior to the stumble “Big Ben” had gone 2-2 in the Octagon with success against Gilbert Yvel and Brendan Schaub.

UFC note to self: must find more heavyweights as current crop keep fighting each other and bringing in mediocre LHW’s isnt the answer.

i know they signed a couple of new European guys recently, one from Russia looks interesting. they need more though, we do have a decent crop of heavyweights over this side of the world

Vera looked great in his first HW run until the Sylvia fight, hope to see him look good again with some added muscle and no weight cut. Rothwell is no walk in the park but Vera should be the quicker and more accurate striker here.

I may be one of the few guys left in MMA that still likes Vera. But he went through the HW division at one of it’s worst times in history and the fighters have only gotten bigger and better. That said, it’s still a much thinner division than LHW and a couple of wins will keep him at gatekeeper status which is better than “let’s cut this guy” status. It doesn’t hurt either that Rothwell is exactly the type of HW Vera did really good against.

BUT, I love me some Big Ben too. Especially now that he’s slimmed down a bit. However, with his recent losses, you gotta figure both guys are looking to keep their jobs.

I don’t know who to route for in this one, but for some reason, I really like this fight.

I think vera would be a better lhw. Rothwells a hard guy to be he doesnt seem to get hurt a ref stoppage or sub seems to be the way to beat em and veras not gonna pull it off.
