UFC officials have confirmed a cut suffered by middleweight Costa Philippou cost the heavy-handed striker a shot at beating former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo Souza in a co-headlining clash at UFC on FX 8. Though disappointing, the organization also provided some good news, as streaking 26-year old Chris Camozzi has stepped up to fill the vacancy.
As a result of the change, Joao Zeferino has been signed to square off against Rafael Natal who Camozzi was originally scheduled to face.
The 19-5 Camozzi has emerged with his hand raised in a quartet of consecutive clashes including success against Luiz Cane and Nick Ring. With five TKOs and six submissions to his credit, Camozzi should serve as an interesting challenge to Souza despite the short notice involved.
“Jacare” is a Top 10 competitor with polished BJJ and ever-improving stand-up. He holds an overall record of 17-3.
UFC on FX 8 is scheduled for May 18 in Brazil and will feature Vitor Belfort battling Luke Rockhold in the evening’s main event. Other notable pairings include Hacran Diaz-Nik Lentz and Rafael dos Anjos-Evan Dunham.
