UFC flyweight Joseph Benavidez looked impressive last weekend against Darren Uyenoyama but his performance wasn’t enough to let the 28-year old leapfrog John Moraga as the division’s top contender. As such, Moraga will meet champion Demetrious Johnson as originally planned before an injury to “Mighty Mouse” forced him out of their April outing.
UFC officials have confirmed the clash will headline UFC on FOX 8. The card is scheduled for July 27 in Seattle, Washington. The organization also made a previously rumored rumble between Miesha Tate-Liz Carmouche a done deal.
Johnson is 17-2-1 with wins at 125 pounds over Benavidez, Ian McCall, and most recently John Dodson. He also owns past victories over the likes of Norifumi Yamamoto and Miguel Torres from his time competing as an undersized bantamweight prior to the UFC’s creation of a flyweight division.
The 13-1 Moraga has come out with his hand raised in seven straight scraps including finishes of Ulysses Gomez and Chris Cariaso inside the Octagon. Eight of his wins have featured some form of stoppage.
