Mixed Martial Arts has proven itself to be an unpredictable sport on countless occasions. However, in the opinion of UFC light heavyweight Vinny Magalhaes there is at least one certainty – Phil Davis (10-1) will not tap him out. Magalhaes is scheduled to scrap with Davis this weekend at UFC 159 and understands his adversary is an accomplished athlete. He just isn’t one with submission skills worth the decorated BJJer’s concern.
“In an MMA fight, anything can happen. But a submission from Phil Davis on me? No way. That’s just ridiculous. For him to think that, he has to be completely insane. Delusional, or insane,” said Magalhaes in an interview with MMAJunkie Radio, referring to recent statements from Davis regarding his ability to finish their fight on the mat. “All his dominant wins weren’t against guys who have the kind of game I have. He won on the ground the way he can’t win against me. There’s no way.”
Meanwhile, Magalhaes is beyond confident in his own skills when it comes to locking up limb up or snagging a choke en route to a submission stoppage.
“I feel there’s so many different ways that I can win this fight. It’s not that it’s an easy fight. Phil is a great athlete. There’s a reason why he’s No. 8 in the official rankings. There’s a reason why people think it’s such a mismatch. He’s a great athlete. But there’s so many holes in his game, and I feel like his game is the perfect style for me,” explained Magalhaes before boasting, “If he takes me down, 10 seconds is enough for me to submit him.”
Magalhaes is currently on a six-fight run with finishes in each. Eight of his ten wins have come by way of submission.
