Lightweight Gilbert Melendez is 21-2 in his career, is on an impressive winning streak, and has beaten a number of legitimate foes. However, plenty of MMA fans have never seen “El Nino” fight, opting to focus on action in the Octagon rather than the sport in general.
One person who is very familiar with the threat Melendez poses is champion Benson Henderson. As such, Henderson understands how talented Melendez is and isn’t underselling the Californian’s abilities just because he’ll be making his UFC debut this weekend when they face off at UFC on FOX 7.
“Gilbert is being a little bit under-appreciated. He’s not as well-known by a lot of the casual fans and that kind of stuff, but to the hardcore fans, they know how tough he is; they know how good he is. He’s been considered a top what – Top three? Top five fighter on the planet for a long, long time, not just recently. I know how tough he is. I’m definitely not sleeping on him. I know how good he is,” explained Henderson in an interview with the UFC’s website. “I’m going to make sure I bring my best; bring my A-game. I’m not going to sleep on him or disrespect him by saying, `He’s just this. He’s not very good.’ Naw – he’s darn good. I know how good he is. I have to make sure to bring my best so that come April 20th, I leave there with my hand raised and the belt around my waist still.”
Henderson himself holds an overall record of 18-2 with success in his last six scraps. Fans can catch them clash in the main event tomorrow night at some point after the main card starts at 8:00 PM EST.
