Light heavyweight Tyrone Spong has only seen action a single time where MMA is concerned but has already been labeled as a name to watch in the sport given his success as a kickboxer. Spong lived up to the promise in his debut, scoring an opening round knockout at WSOF 1, and will attempt to follow up on the impressive showing on June 14 when he faces Angel DeAnda at WSOF 3.
The bout was announced along with a handful of others in an official press release. As expected, the card will take place in Las Vegas and features welterweights Jon Fitch-Josh Burkman in the main event. Other confirmed clashes include Brian Cobb-Justin Gaethje, Rolles Gracie-Dave Huckaba, Kendrick Miree-Krasimir Mladenov, and John Gunderson-Dan Lauzon.
Spong is 69-6-1 as a kickboxer with knockouts of Melvin Manhoef and most recently Remy Bojansky. Interestingly, the 6’2” Dutchman also holds a win over WSOF President Ray Sefo from a clash under the K-1 banner.
Though a relative unknown, the 11-2 DeAnda has no problem trading strikes and has ten TKOs to his credit to show for it. He is currently on a four-fight run including three first-frame finishes.
Fans can catch WSOF 3 on NBC Sports with preliminary pairings streaming online.
