Strikeforce may be dead but the organization’s elite have lived on with many of the company’s top competitors now calling the UFC home. Though the majority of match-ups featuring Strikeforce veterans have pitted them longtime residents of the Octagon, a handful of tilts have featured bouts that could have easily been featured on Showtime had they been booked six months ago.
The latest such scrap involves the last man to wear welterweight gold under the Strikeforce banner – Tarec Saffiedine – locking horns with heavy-handed slugger Robbie Lawler. According to an official announcement, the two will tussle on July 27 at UFC on FOX 8 in Seattle.
A bout between lightweights Bobby Green (20-5) and Danny Castillo (15-5) was also confirmed.
The scrap will be Lawler’s second in the infamous eight-sided cage since returning to the promotion, stopping Josh Koscheck with strikes last February. He holds an overall mark 20-9 with seventeen knockouts notched on his record.
Saffiedine (14-3) is on a four-fight winning streak including an outpointing of Nate Marquardt to win Strikeforce gold a few months back. He can also lay claim to past victories over Brock Larson, Scott Smith, and Roger Bowling.
