The UFC’s lightweight division is a little less interesting this morning thanks to the organization’s decision to drop unique submission-specialist Colin Fletcher from the roster. Known for his bizarre appearance and trademark clown mask, the lanky Brit came to fans’ attention as a member of the Ultimate Fighter: Australia vs. U.K. cast where he went on to secure a spot in one of the divisional finals.
Fletcher revealed the bad news on his Facebook where he questioned the UFC’s reasoning but assured his supporters he’ll make his way back into the Octagon at some point down the road.
“I’ll do whatever I have to be back where I belong and have loads of fun doing it because I’m a fighter,” wrote Fletcher. “Whether it’s in someone’s back garden or the Madison Square Garden, it’s all the same.”
The 8-3 Fletcher tapped out seven of the opponents he’d beaten before signing with the UFC. He went 0-2 under the company’s banner including a decision loss to Mike Ricci at UFC 158.
Read Fletcher’s full statement below:
“Is it just me or does (getting) cut after one official UFC fight seam a little harsh? I know I didn’t perform my best but it wasn’t a boring fight.
And it was against a guy who trains out of TriStar with Rory MacDonald and Georges St-Pierre. I took the fight on six weeks notice in his home town, got there four days before the fight, and basically trained with a hand full of local guys and people I teach.
I thought I’d done okay in TUF Smashes I only really struggled with Norman Parke who I had became really close with and may have looked an arse in that fight also but I was told that showed I had a heart and was a good guy.
And at the end of the day TUF is a competition and I was a finalist I know of a few semifinalists who get knocked out or submitted and go on to be given multiple chances. I know I could beat 75% of UFC fighters given the chance.
And I will get the chance again. I’ll do whatever I have to be back where I belong and have loads of fun doing it because I’m a fighter and whether its in someone’s back garden or the Madison Square Garden, it’s all the same.
I live for this sh*t!!!!”
